Developers are starting to request Steam Frames directly through Steam, and a few of them have already shared their early results on Twitter/X. It feels like Valve has finally opened the door and given studios the green light to grab the hardware and begin proper Steam Frame ports. One example is a developer behind Beyond Sandbox, who posted a shot of the headset alongside a Steamworks confirmation showing their hardware request. It’s the clearest sign yet that studios are getting their hands on the kit.
The Steam Frame is Valve’s new VR device. Picture something in the same space as a Meta Quest, but running SteamOS and built to play your Steam library. Games will run natively on the headset, and you’ll also be able to stream or tether from other SteamOS hardware like the Steam Machine. That’s the setup I’ll be going with once it arrives.
This is the first moment that really feels like Valve is gearing up for launch. If devs are getting units, testing them and talking about them publicly, then an early 2026 release looks more realistic than ever. Valve never gives dates until they’re fully locked in, but dev kits going out is usually when things start to move.
