What’s New in Update 1.2.1
The biggest addition is the Pangaea Plus map, where all civs begin on a shared central landmass, surrounded by treasure-filled islands. It’s built to encourage naval conflict and mid-game exploration — especially once the Exploration Age kicks in.
Multiplayer has also been improved. The human player limit in the early game has increased, allowing up to 8 players on standard maps as early as Antiquity and Exploration Ages.
Leader and Civ Balance Changes
This update includes a wide range of balance passes:
- Friedrich now spawns Infantry more frequently through science and culture buildings.
- Hatshepsut earns Culture from unique resources, rather than relying on imports.
- Pachacuti gets a new food-to-production bonus that should make him far more viable.
- Jose Rizal, Himiko, Xerxes, and others see yield boosts or more meaningful trade bonuses.
- Civilizations like Inca, Russia, Great Britain, Bulgaria, Khmer, and Majapahit have all received trait adjustments or building improvements.
These tweaks aim to keep underused leaders competitive across the full game, not just early or late eras.
UI and AI Improvements
The patch also brings in dozens of interface fixes and AI upgrades:
- Smarter AI combat and Commander pathing
- Better tooltip alignment and UI spacing
- New Civilopedia entries for starvation, unrest, and unit upgrades
- Fixed multiplayer issues and added dropdown sorting for civ selection
The AI is also more consistent when pursuing victory conditions and now handles diplomacy and peace offers more logically.
What’s Coming in June
The June update is shaping up to be a big one. Here’s what’s currently in development:
- Large and Huge map support
- Steam Workshop support
- Expanded town specialization and religious belief systems
- More city-state balancing and UI upgrades
The developers also plan to share a detailed check-in soon, highlighting what’s confirmed for that next patch.
Heads up: To get the full benefit of this update, you may want to start a new game or progress into a new Age. Some changes won’t appear mid-save unless triggered by age advancement.
